Species Information
- Shrub to small tree growing up to 10 m tall. Leaves 8-28 cm long, base heart-shaped, tri-nerved, simple. Flowers 1.5-2.5 cm long, dark red or purple with a whitish base, solitary, pendulous. Fruits 2.5-3 cm long, top-shaped with 5 deep ridges, splitting with long irritant hairs along margins.
- Widespread in north-eastern India, Bangladesh, South China, Thailand, Indochina, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and North Australia
- Scattered distribution in forest margins, valley gullies, open and dry places, and lowland evergreen forests to lower montane forests 300-1100 m elevation
