Species Information
- Tree with a single stem growing up to 50 m tall. Bark brown and twigs conspicuously swollen at the nodes. Leaves opposite and stalked. Leaf blades 4-15 by 2-10 cm, leathery, typically oval or drop-shaped with rather sharp tips, dark green above and yellow-green with brown spots below. Flowering shoots are 1-6 cm long and divided into two equal or three branches. Flowers 3 mm long, white or pale-greenish, stalkless or shortly-stalked, and developing from the angles of leaves. Fruits are round berries up to 7 mm wide, ripening pink to red, with fleshy pulp that contains many seeds.

- It grows in lowland and hill forests up to 1800 m altitude. In Singapore, it can be found growing on the landward edge of mangrove forests and sandy beaches.
