Species Information
- Evergreen tree able to grow to about 8-17 m tall in its natural habitat. Leaves around 5-18 cm long and 3-10 cm wide, rather stiff, ovate to elliptic, distinct 3 yellow veins from the base to the tip, opposite. Young leaves tend to be reddish, and mature leaves dark green. Cream to white flowers about 3 mm wide, with an unpleasant smell, and borne on axillary and terminal panicle inflorescence. Fruits are ovoid drupes about 1.5-2 cm long, fleshy, purple, and contain 1 seed.

- Requires a warm and wet climate with no extremes of heat and cold. It can survive months with less rain but not a prolonged dry season. It should receive rain about 150 days per year. Rocky and stony ground is unsuitable. Occurrence in waterlogged and marshy areas will result in undesirable, bitter products that are much less aromatic.
