Species Information
- Medium-sized semi-deciduous tree usually growing up to 25 m tall in cultivation. Trunk is up to 0.8 m across, appearing more massive than it actually is due to the dense tangle of long (up to 3 m) dangling branchlets that emerge and cover the lower portion, especially in older trees. Bark greyish-brown and fissured. Leaves smooth to somewhat velvety with slightly serrated margins, simple, spirally arranged at ends of branches. Flowers highly-fragrant and produced in racemes along woody extrusions emerging directly from the trunk or large branches further up the tree.
- Costa Rica, Panama, French Guiana, and tropical South America
- Widely planted in different tropical and semi-tropical areas around the world. Its native habitat is primary rainforest.
- Up to 1000 m
