Species Information
- Slow-growing and coniferous gymnosperm reaching 45 m in the wild. Crown is conical for young trees, becoming more oval with age. Leaves linear-lanceolate and pendulous, giving the tree a slightly weeping appearance. Male and female cones on separate trees. Male cones pollen-bearing, cylindrical, creamy-white, and produced in clusters of up to 8. Female cones seed-bearing ovules, solitary with swollen receptacles. Seeds green with a waxy whitish bloom, not enclosed within fruits, instead resting on top of swollen fleshy receptacles that mature from blue to bright red, are edible and reported to taste sweet.
